Modeling Tips in the Beginning

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Modeling is hard work and does not come easy. It is difficult to become a successful model. However, determination and hard work can help a model become successful. Here are some tips that will help any aspiring model break into the industry:

Good photos- less is more. A few good photos are much better than a bunch of “ok” photos filling your portfolio.

Only strong models survive- having a good attitude about the business is what will make a model successful. It is important to be prepared for critique and learn from those critiques, but do not let the critiques get you down and damage your spirit.

Sell Yourself- you should market yourself. It would help to have a portfolio that is comprised of photos that best represent your personality and who you are. By marketing yourself, casting directors can better understand who you are and hopefully they will in-turn book you for a modeling job.

Working with photographers- don’t just work for anyone, shoot with photographers who are credible and knowledgeable. If they are offering their services for free, they most likely do not hold themselves to the same professional standards that you hold yourself to as well. Working on a TFP basis is a great way to build a portfolio, but remember that the photographer will forever hold the rights to those images.

Do your homework- research agencies to make sure you are being represented by a company that shares the same goals as you and does not just get you bookings, but wants you to be the best model you can be. Any agency charging you upfront fees to be a part of their agency is not legitimate and is only looking to profit from your initial investment and not booking you on any gigs.

Prepare- practice many different types of facial impressions in front of the mirror. Try to practice as many different poses and facial expressions as possible. By doing so, you are able get a feel for what poses and angles work best for you. Have a friend photograph you and find out how to look your best in front of the camera. Dance classes are also a great way to become more confident and in control of your body movements.

Upkeep- it is important that models keep up their physical appearance, after all modeling is all about physical appearance. It is important for models to exercise regularly and take care of their hair and skin. By keeping up your physical appearance, you make yourself more desirable to both agencies and casting agents. A healthy diet and drinking plenty of water along with a workout routine will ensure that you are always looking your best.
