Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour and designer Michael Kors were on the list of speakers at the 13th Annual Public Forum presented by the Harris Center at Massachusetts General Hospital held at the Harvard Business School.  Entitled “Health Matters: Weight and Wellness in the World of Fashion,” the forum addressed the actions being taken to reduce weight issues and eating disorders in models.  Wintour specifically brought up the positive strides the industry has been making to ensure models’ health which include setting minimum age requirements, banning booze and tobacco backstage during fashion shows and reducing hours for younger models.  Some talking points include “We are all responsible for the models’ health,” she declared in her speech. And Michael Kors further addressed the age issue in models by promising not to use models under the age of 16 in his own shows.  Another speaker included Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova who spoke up as a model herself and dealing with anorexia, making the very sad and honest statement: “It is very hard to have a feeling of stability. Anorexia is sometimes the only form of control these girls have.“ However, the forum ended on a positive and hopeful note as Vodianova stated,
“It’s in fashion now to be healthy.”

Newcomer Made into a Top Model at NY fashion Week

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

As much as we all love the beautiful, and impossibly chic clothes that grace the runways of New York Fashion Week, we love the models more. Fashion week is not only a time to advance the careers of designers, but models too!

Newcomer Carla Gebhart, who before fashion week was just another young girl trying to make it in the world of modeling, is now a major name in the fashion industry. After walking into numerous castings for incredibly picky clients like Gucci and Burberry, Gebhart found herself hired on the spot for their runway shows. This Argentinean teen is now scheduled to appear on even more runways in Milan and Paris Fashion Week. Keep your eyes open, something tells me we will be seeing a lot more of this young newcomer. Campaigns? Billboards? Sounds about right.

While walking the runway for Naomi Campbell’s charity fashion show, model Agyness Deyn fell not once, but twice! However being the professional model that she is, Agyness managed to shake off her fall and take it in stride.  As you can see, even the best models in the business make mistakes on the runway.

New developments have been announced in the death of beloved British fashion designer Alexander McQueen.  News out of London states that just a day before the funeral for his mother Joyce was to take place, Alexander McQueen took his life by hanging himself in his London flat. Those that were close to McQueen have said he wasn’t coping well with the death of his mother and the 10 days following her death he had locked himself away.  During this time, it is believed that McQueen spiraled into a deep and dark depression.

Last Thursday night, celebrities took the runway in New York for The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection 2010 Fashion Show in support of heart disease. Heidi Klum was there to support the cause and looked absolutely beautiful on the runway as usual.  Klum work a sexy gown designed by John Galliano.  Kim Kardashian also took to the runway in a Marchesa grown, an anomaly for this print model. Kimora Lee Simmons also made an appearance on the runway for charity, donning a dress she designed from her soon to be launched collection titled Kouture by Kimora.  Simmons’ appearance at the event leaves us wondering if she will be making a comeback in the modeling industry.

As we have previously heard, Vera Wang will be lending her creative talents to create skating costumes for the Winter Olympics.  On Tuesday, male figure skater, Evan Lysacek, wore one of Wang’s looks she designed for him. Lysacek recently revealed that he will be donning 5 total looks designed by Wang in Vancouver.

Kate Moss and her rocker fiance Jamie Hence announced that they are working on a play based on a model’s crazy drug infested life. A source blabs: “Jamie is addicted to playwriting and is always jotting down scenes. He mentioned the idea to Kate, based around the lives of her and her friends, and Kate leapt at the chance to get involved.”  However, others in the business worry that the play may reveal intimate details of the business that may upset others.

Alexander the Great

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

When you think of a baggy tee- shirt and a pair of jeans, the words sexy, sleek and stylish don’t usually come to mind. But with the recent explosion in the fashion scene of New York -based fashion designer Alexander Wang, that all has changed.

Wang, the recipient of the CFDA Swarovski Women’s Wear Designer of the Year in 2009, believes that the way clothes are styled, and mixed with each woman’s individuality can be sexier, and more stylish than any evening gown.

Wang combines a style of solid basics, as shown in his new collection, T by Alexander Wang. Cotton tees, sweaters and slinky dresses, with a funky edge, including a new leather and chain vest, and black lace pants are all featured in his Spring 2010 collection. Wang tends to stick to more of a neutral color palette season after season, which some may find dull, or boring, but his punch of textures and fabric draping make it impossible to ignore his clothes.

Wang has also expanded into accessories in the recent years, adding luxurious leather bags and perfect pumps to his collection. Both his clothes and accessories all mix and match from season to season, and have that feel of eternal style. Though some prices in his collection may run a bit high, there are always a few staples at a lower price point each season, and his incredible looks will last for decades.
