Thursday, January 21st, 2010

The world is in search for ways to improve the devastating circumstances in Haiti, which occurred after a magnitude 7 earthquake hit near the Haitian Capital of Port-au-Prince. This disaster has left much of the country in utter dismay, as foreign governments and non-government organizations attempt to help the nation rebuild. With a death toll of over 70,000 people and a nations infrastructure to weak to help its citizens, people around the world are thinking of unique ways to raise money for relief funds.

Two large figures in the entertainment industry, Lady Gaga & Ben Stiller, have turned to fashion in hopes of bettering the current situation. In the week following the earthquake, these two stars each started Haitian aid platforms.

Lady Gaga has designed a tee-shirt that uses Haiti’s flag colors and has promised that 100% of all proceeds will be go towards relief funds.

Ben Stiller has started a campaign, named “Stillerstrong,” which is dedicated to raising money to help build/rebuild schools in Haiti. The campaign is a spin off of the “Livestrong,” fund raiser developed by Lance Armstrong, while retaining Stiller’s most known attribute, comedy; as the website displays “Zoolander” in the Stillerstrong product. Stillerstrong is selling fashionable headbands with the guarantee that all proceeds will be devoted to Haitian schools; with $15 headbands (multiple colors), $100 limited addition headbands, and $500 autographed headbands.

Jason

Designer Jason Wu continues his time in the fashion spotlight as rumors are confirmed that Michelle Obama will be wearing one of his gowns on the cover of the upcoming March issue of Vogue. The Washington Post reports:

In the cover photo, taken by Annie Leibovitz, Obama is leaning on a soft beige sofa at the Hay Adams Hotel, where the first family stayed days before the historic inauguration. Obama is wearing a magenta dress by designer Jason Wu, who designed her inaugural ball gown. Her hand rests under her chin. Her left hand folded beneath her. She is wearing a diamond that you do not often see her wearing in recent appearances.

Jason Wu also designed the First Lady’s inauguration dress, and all of this before the age of 26, we can’t wait to see what this talented designer will show us in the future!
